William was the son of William and Mary Brown (nee Sooffirs). William was a bricklayer and Mary a domestic servant. William’s father died of tuberculosis on 3/12/1881 at 28 Victoria St, Scarborough. Mary then married William Duck on 22/8/1882.
William Harwood Brown fished out of Aberdeen on the trawler SS Strathdee with his half brother John Will Duck. William Harwood Brown married Agnes Calpin, who died 28/5/1907, aged 27.
William served in the Royal Naval Reserve. He sailed out of Lowestoft Naval Base on HMT BenArdna, Minesweeper number 289 as chief petty officer (second Hand). William died of drowning after having to jump into the sea in the Downs off Dover when HMT Ben Ardna sank following an explosion, presumed to be the result of hitting a mine. He was 35 years old.
