The 1891 census shows Herbert as having been born in Leeds the son of George ( a labourer for York Corporation) and his wife Elizabeth. They lived at 32, Nippet Terrace,Herbert his brother George,sister Beatrice and his grandmother.Herbert was 8years old and described as a scholar.
By the 1901 census Herbert was living in Scarborough with the Leston family at 5, Mill Lane.At eighteen years old he was working as a labourer.
In 1910 Herbert married Mary Elizabeth Tindall (Frank Tindall’s younger sister) the banns were called on August 28th September 4th and September 11th. They married on September 24th.
They lived for a while with the Tindall family at 14, Garibaldi Street. Then they moved to Aberdeen to live at 53, Jasmine Terrace. There was one child,a daughter, Eva.
Herbert was a cook aboard the steam trawler Grecian Prince she was registered at North Shields (SN14).on the 15th of December1918 the crew of the Grecian Prince was fishing approximately 22 miles off Kinnaird Head when it was destroyed by a mine. Eight of the crew of ten died Herbert being one of them.
The newspaper the “Evening Express” reported on Tuesday December 17th wrote “All members of the crew of the Aberdeen trawler Grecian Prince lost by the blowing up of a mine were married.” It went on to list the men. “Herbert Kipling, cook 52, Jasmine Terrace, wife and one child aged 18 months.
The Reward advertisement which appeared in the Aberdeen Express on the 23rd of December regarding George Tindall also included Herbert Tindall ( they were brothers- in- law) and gave a description of him.
Herbert Kipling height 4 ft 11 ins,build medium, hair brown,complexion dark, wearing brown kersey trousers and blue guernsey.
